You Are What You Eat

Every 35 days, your skin replaces itself, your liver in about a month.  Your body makes these new cells in large part from the food you eat.  What you eat literally becomes you!  Healthy eating is the single most important thing you can do for a well functioning body and mind.9cebcfb977c94e589bc3e86bc350514f

It is simple. Healthy eating is not a diet just for weight loss.  You don’t have to eat less, just right!  Eat fruits and vegetables, lean meats, grains (brown is best), healthy fats, and lots of water.  Eat fewer packaged and processed foods (no more fast foods) and less sugar.  The closer a food is to it’s natural state, the better.  Michael Pollen says “Eat food.  Not too much.  Mostly Plants”.  That pretty much sums it up!

When you start eating real foods, i.e., whole foods, you will begin to feel and look amazing!  Your energy levels get recharged, you sleep better, you lose weight, and you won’t crave sugar anymore.  You can also reduce (or cure) heart disease, diabetes, Alzheimers risk, strokes, cancers, and many more other illnesses.  For more information on that check out Forks over knives.

First things first.   Go through your pantry and refrigerator and get rid of things you can’t pronounce (except quinoa…keep that).  The first thing I did was throw out every item that contained high fructose corn syrup.  HFCS is toxic!  It has been shown to destroy your liver, it contains mercury, and causes significant weight gain. You will be surprised how many items contain this toxic substance.  Next, get rid of all your industrial oils or “vegetable” oils (corn, soybean, canola).  These are highly processed bad fats that contain solvents that increase your risk of cancers and heart disease, as well as excessive weight gain.  Margarine is made from this as well.  Next time your friend tries to throw your margarine away, let her (I am not going to name names here).  Instead, use olive, avocado, or coconut oil (friend who I won’t name…, it is time to open your jar).

A small shift can bring huge benefits over time, and slowly you will see and feel the difference. Read labels! Take it slow, and replace items with better items a little at time.  A healthy diet and lifestyle will not only change your body, but will change your mind, your attitude, and your mood too!  What do you have to lose (besides weight and inflammation .. ha )  If you need whole food inspiration, check out my pinterest page (the link is on the blog).  I have clean treats, snacks, and healthy meal options.  I love these yummy chocolate chunk cookies, sweetened only with maple syrup . They are a big hit with my friends.

Take care of your body…it’s the only place you have to live.
